Francine Kay, Piano
– JANUARY 2024
Juno-nominated Canadian pianist Francine Kay will perform her program for solo piano Things Lived and Dreamt. Francine Kay, visiting from Princeton University will play repertoire from her recent CD recording of piano music by celebrated Czech composers Dvorak and Suk, Debussy, renowned living Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, and the brilliant but tragically short-lived female composer Vítězslava Kaprálová.
Kai Gleusteen, violin and Catherine Ordronneau, piano

Violinist Kai Gleusteen, and pianist Catherine Ordronneau. Returning once again from their home base in Barcelona, the virtuosic duo will perform an exuberant program to include works by Dvorak, Kreisler, R. Strauss, and the glorious theme tune from the movie Cinema Paradiso by Ennio Morricone.
Anna Pietrzak – Solo Guitar

Award-winning Polish classical guitarist Anna Pietrzak will play a program of solo guitar repertoire by celebrated composers including Bach, Tansman, Rodrigo, and Assad.
Jane Coop – Piano

Welcoming back world-renowned Canadian pianist Jane Coop, who will close our 2023/24 season with an exciting program for solo piano including the great Chopin B minor Sonata, works by Beethoven, Ravel’s Oiseaux Tristes and Debussy’s L’isle Joyeuse.
Kai Gleusteen, violin, and Catherine Ordronneau, piano

Our new year of Music At Wentworth Villa opens with a recital by Canadian violinist Kai Gleusteen and French pianist Catherine Ordronneau. The players, based in Spain, were due to play for us in 2021 but were unable to travel due to the pandemic. Fingers crossed this time!
Alec Pearson, guitar

Join us for an early springtime recital of music for classical guitar with Alec Pearson. Alec is based in Vancouver and is a well-known and respected recitalist and teacher. We are excited to welcome him to Wentworth Villa for the first time.
An Afternoon of Baroque Music

Our third concert features two wonderful performers based in Vancouver, Canadian pianist Jane Coop (who has performed on two past occasions at Wentworth Villa) and Spanish clarinetist José Franch-Ballester. They will perform music for clarinet and piano by Stanford, Brahms, Ravel, Debussy, and Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Opus 109.

We are excited to welcome back pianist Shoko Inoue who has previously performed at Wentworth Villa on a number of occasions. Her new program features works by Franz Liszt, Franz Schubert, Nikolai Medtner, and Beethoven’s well-loved Hammer-Klavier Sonata 106.

A Potpourri of Song for the New Year!

Singers Ingrid Attrot, Sarah Fryer, Benjamin Butterfield, and Gary Relyea will join Toronto-based pianists Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata to perform a mix of art songs of special significance to them, followed by Johannes Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes Op. 52 for vocal quartet and piano duet.

Originally from Uraguay, Professor Pierri now teaches in Vienna.

Russian pianists Daria Fedorova and Ilya Takser will perform a virtuosic program of music for piano four-hands: works by Debussy, Ravel, and Greig, E. MacDowell, as well as contemporary works by D.L. McIntyre, and A. Rosenblatt.

Schubert’s Schwanengesang D.597 for Voice and Piano

Tenor Isaiah Bell and collaborative pianist Anna Cal will perform Franz Schubert’s powerful song cycle written in 1828 in a special program interspersing Schubert’s songs with complementary folk-song arrangements by other composers.
Benjamin Butterfield – Tenor, Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata, piano: Masterworks for Voice and Piano

Renowned Canadian tenor Benjamin Butterfi will perform with pianists Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata, who received the Order of Canada for their longtime work running the concert series The Aldeburgh Connection in Toronto. Benjamin Butterfield is particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of the Lieder and English Song repertoire. This recital will include Schumann’s Leiderkreis Op.24 as well as two evocative works for voice and piano by English composers Benjamin Britten and Gerald Finzi. Pianists Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata will also play Schubert’s wonderful Rondo in A, D.951 for four hands.

Sara Davis Buechner – Japanese Piano Music and Ibert’s Histories, with guest artist Yayoi Hirano (Japanese mask dancer)

Our season ends with an exciting return visit by internationally renowned pianist Sara Davis Buechner, who gave the inaugural recital at Wentworth Villa in May 2016. Now based at Temple University, Philadelphia, Ms Buechner is returning to the West Coast to play in Portland, Oregon, and we have been able to persuade her to include Wentworth Villa in her busy itinerary. She will perform an acclaimed program she gave at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York in June 2017. The program comprises Japanese Piano Music and French composer Jacques Ibert’s Histoires, choreographed and danced with Japanese masks by Yayoi Hirano.
Microcosmos & Sarah Fryer – Mezzo-Soprano: Three Twentieth-Century Masterworks for String Quartet

Microcosmos Quartet and mezzo Sarah Fryer return to present three powerful and evocative works, including Janáček’s String Quartet no.2 and Respighi’s lyric poem II Tramonto.
Claire Marchand – Flute & Albertina Chan – Harp: Contemporary works for Flute and Harp

Renowned Montreal-based flute player Claire Marchand will perform with harpist Albertina Chan in a thrilling contemporary program, which includes works by Canadian composers Gilles Tremblay, R. Murray Schafer, Caroline Lizotte and Owen Underhill. The program will also feature a newly commissioned work by Montreal composer Nicole Lizée.
Brenda Fedoruk, Sarah Fryer & Shoko Inoue – Music for Flute, Voice & Piano

Brenda Fedoruk, Sarah Fryer, and Shoko Inoue, will present a program of French and North American music for voice, flute and piano. The program will include love songs by Andre Previn, which feature the sultry sounds of the alto flute.

Shoko Inoue will be performing selected jewels from Robert Schumann’s extensive piano repertoire in two programs offered on consecutive afternoons.
Microcosmos Quartet – Two 20th Century Masterworks for String Quartet

Our final concert of the season will feature Microcosmos Quartet, based in Vancouver, and committed to performing string quartets written in the last 100 years. On this occasion they will perform powerful works by Bartok and Britten.
Jane Coop – Piano works by Beethoven and Rachmaninov

Our first concert of the season is an exciting performance of piano music by Beethoven and Rachmaninov given by internationally renowned pianist Jane Coop, who is at the start of a cross-Canada recital tour. We are thrilled that she has chosen Wentworth Villa for the first recital of her tour! The program includes Beethoven’s much-loved “Moonlight” Sonata Op 27 no.2.
Andrei Burdeti – Classical Guitar: Music from the South

Acclaimed young classical guitarist Andrei Burdeti will offer a varied program including beautiful works by Villa-Lobos, Albéniz and Dyens. We are especially excited to hear this wonderful instrument in the intimate recital room acoustic at Wentworth Villa, which promises to be a perfect match.
Marc Destrubé – Solo Violin Music from the 17th and 18th Centuries

Our first artist Marc Destrubé grew up in Victoria and now enjoys an international career playing baroque and modern violins. His recital is a rare opportunity to hear Bach’s wonderful Chaconne, thought by many to be the greatest piece ever written for solo violin.
Jeanette Jonquil, Clarinet & Terence Dawson, Piano
– NOVEMBER 2016
Jeanette Jonquil is principal clarinetist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra with whom she has performed notable solo works, as well as playing as guest soloist with other symphony orchestras and winning first prize in the Coleman Chamber Music Competition in Los Angeles. Jeanette has crafted a wonderful program for her Wentworth Villa performance that showcases the beauty of the clarinet. She will be joined by renowned pianist Terence Dawson, well known to CBC radio listeners for his numerous chamber music recordings and to audiences across Canada and beyond.
