New Book Offers a Window into Lives of Immigrant Women

On December 10th, local author Michiko Sakamoto-Senge will launch her compelling new publication, Beauty of a New Land, at Wentworth Villa.

Through text and photos, Beauty of a New Land tells the stories of five elder women (including the author) who immigrated to Canada, decades ago, from around the world.

The book celebrates their contributions to Canadian society and, in response, what Canada has offered to them. It describes how each has managed to bridge the culture of their homeland with that of their adopted nation.

The book offers an intimate and candid glimpse into each of the four women’s female intergenerational family relationships; the book explores the complex cultural dynamics that tend to exist within immigrant families who become Canadians.

The event will include readings by the author and talks by the four women featured in the book, followed by a social gathering.

Date: Sunday, December 10 – 2:00-4:30 pm

Place: Wentworth Villa: 1156 Fort Street. Street parking only; venue is wheelchair accessible from the side door.
