SUMMARY:Tending Eden: A Garden History of Victoria
DESCRIPTION:Martin Segger will talk about the golden years of Victoria as a garden city\, 1890-1930. He will focus on those who commissioned and created the great estate gardens\, the social rituals they accommodated\, and their importance as symbols of social status\, wealth\, and of horticultural and aesthetic sophistication. \nMartin Segger is an architectural historian and urban critic who has written extensively on Victoria’s built environment. He is the author of numerous publications on the architectural history of Victoria and BC including (with Douglas Franklin) the path-breaking Victoria: A Primer for Regional History in Architecture 1843-1929 (1979) and The Buildings of Samuel Maclure: In Search of Appropriate Form  (1986). He is also a former City of Victoria councillor and co-chair of the Provincial Capital Commission\, and has enjoyed a long career as a gallery curator focusing on BC historic and decorative arts. \nPlease reserve your seating below.

DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome Italo-Croatian concert pianist Ida Pelliccioli\, making her Wentworth Villa debut\, on tour from her home base in Paris. She describes her program as “a journey from Spanish keyboard music to the Viennese Classic Style through the work of a forgotten composer – Manuel Blasco de Nebra.”\n  \n\n  \nRecital Program\n\n\n\nD. She studied at the Nice Conservatoire de Région and at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred Cortot in the class of Serguei Markarov\, Unesco Artist for Peace. During her studies\, Ida Pelliccioli was awarded several scholarships\, amongst them\, one from the Zygmunt Zaleski Foundation and one from Fondation Albert Roussel. \nIda Pelliccioli participated in number of master-classes\, among others with Jean-Claude Pennetier\, Gerard Wyss and received a double diploma in interpretation and pedagogy\, at the École Normale in Paris. \nShe received artistic guidance from Norma Fisher who teaches at the Royal College of Music in London and she is one of  the rare pianists to have received guidance from  the cuban concert pianist Jorge Luis Prats. \nIda chose to avoid the international competition circuit and\, before becoming a full-time pianist\, received a double master diploma at the Sorbonne University – in Italian Literature and in Ancient Greek History\, specializing for the latter in the practice of music during the Hellenistic period. \nIda has been performing throughout Europe\, Canada\, Australia and South Africa. In 2024 she has debuted in Sweden\, Lithuania\, Austria\, Iceland and Australia. She has debuted in Singapore and will also play for the first time in Thailand in 2025. During her 2024-2025 Season\, Ida will perform\, among other prestigious venues\, at the National Gallery in London and the Royal Theater and Concert Hall in Nottingham and the Lyceum Club in Florence in collaboration with Amici della Musica di Firenze. \nIda shows a great interest in contemporary music: in 2023 she has performed music by Polish composer Elżbieta Sikora with soprano Joanna Freszel live on French radio – France Musique – in September 2023. \nIda has always been opened to other forms of art and collaborations. She appeared on screen\, playing the role of a pianist\, for the american TV Series “Find me in Paris” – Season 1 and 2 (2017/2018) and the french TV Series “Munch” (2018) and “Le diplôme” (2025).\nIn 2019\, she has been casted to double the role of the pianist in the short movie „Quand on ne sait pas voler” directed by Thomas Keumurian and produced by FILMO. \nIn 2021 Ida also took up a teaching position at Paris Conservatoire du 8ème arrondissement.

The group first performed for us in September 2023\, playing a sold-out program of string quartets by Haydn\, Tailleferre\, and Schubert. Hailing from Canada\, Germany and Russia\, the quartet’s members formed the group in Frankfurt am Main and have since gone on to win prizes at major national and international music competitions\, including second prize at both the Mozart International Competition in Salzburg and the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition\, the Prize of the German Music Competition as well as three additional special prizes\, and first prize and the special prize for the best interpretation of a piece by Karol Szymanowski at the inaugural International Karol Szymanowski Competition in Katowice\, Poland. \nThe Eliot Quartett has established itself as a cornerstone of the music scene in its hometown of Frankfurt\, Germany. In addition to appearances at the Alte Oper\, the Polytechnische Gesellschaft concert series and the Schumann Gesellschaft\, the Eliot Quartett is a regular guest at the Holzhausenschlösschen in Frankfurt and founded its own festival ‘Eliots am Main’ in 2022. \nThe Eliot Quartett’s concert schedule includes performances at renowned festivals and concerts series throughout Europe. It has performed at the Bachfest Leipzig\, the Kasseler Musiktagen\, the Mozartfest Würzburg\, the Rheingau Musik Festival\, the Shostakovich Tage\, the Festival Musica Sur and Delta Chamber Music Festival in Spain\, the Styriarte in Graz\, the Mozarteum Salzburg and the Schubertiade. \nThe four musicians began their chamber music instruction with Prof. Hubert Buchberger and went on to study with Prof. Tim Vogler at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main and with Prof. Günter Pichler at the Instituto Internacional de Música de Camera at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. The Eliot Quartett has received valuable musical guidance from Valentin Erben\, Oliver Wille\, Martin Beaver\, and the Mandelring Quartet and enjoys a close working relationship with the esteemed pianist Alfred Brendel and the Belcea Quartet. \nThe Eliot Quartett is named after the American poet T. S. Eliot whose famous work “Four Quartets” was inspired by the innovative late Quartets by Ludwig van Beethoven. Eliot\, like Beethoven\, attempted to establish a connection between past\, present and future by breaking away from the accepted classical forms of the time. \nThe Eliot Quartett has released several recordings on GENUIN classics.
