Having a mixed choir of eight different voices allows a large amount of flexibility for repertoire\, and Octet Victoria has explored choral music from all time periods spanning Renaissance to modern day. Octet Victoria has performed some of the richest music from the choral tradition such as motets by J.S. Bach and J. Brahms\, as well as a variety of new music including selections by Canadian composers such as Ruth Watson Henderson\, Stephanie Martin\, and Nathaniel Dett. This past season\, Octet Victoria collaborated with Victoria Baroque\, produced a concert with an expanded group of sixteen professional singers\, and is pleased to be back at Wentworth Villa for the third time! \nSingers:\nGina Johnson – Soprano\nOlivia Duffin – Soprano\nChar Hodgkins – Alto\nAlana Hayes – Alto\nFelix Butterfield – Tenor\nOliver Dalton – Tenor\nNathan McDonald – Bass\nRowan McWilliams – Bass

SUMMARY:The Stories Houses Tell
DESCRIPTION:Every house is more than a collection of walls and ceilings; houses carry the stories\, memories\, and identities of the people who live in them. In this talk\, Maryam Vakil shares her journey to Yazd – a UNESCO World Heritage City – and the experience of reviving a 200-year-old adobe house. What began as a short visit turned into a deep immersion in the history\, culture\, and architecture of the city. Restoring Homayoun House was not only about reconstruction; it was a way to connect with the historic fabric of Yazd — with its enduring traditions\, the Zoroastrian neighborhood\, and the sense of old-fashioned neighbourliness that still shapes everyday life. This experience led her to reflect on the meaning of home\, its link to personal and collective identity\, and the role of architectural heritage in our lives today. \nFrom the mud-brick courtyards of Yazd to the wooden Victorian houses of Victoria\, this talk is an invitation to listen to the stories that houses tell — each shaped by its own climate\, culture\, and community — and to consider a larger question: when we listen to houses\, what do we rediscover about ourselves? \nMaryam Vakil is an architect and urban designer from Iran\, now living in Victoria. Her work weaves together architecture\, culture\, and memory\, seeking to revive the spirit of spaces and reconnect them with contemporary life\, shaping vibrant and inclusive communities. She currently works with the City of Victoria’s Arts\, Culture and Events team as a Programs & Policy Coordinator.

SUMMARY:Omega String Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Omega Trio is made up of three of Canada’s finest chamber musicians\, who first came together as a string trio (violin\, viola\, cello) through a love of playing together\, and a wish to play the little-heard repertoire for this combination\, some of it by the most famous composers. Their repertoire comprises music from the 18th century to the present day\, including masterworks by Schubert\, Beethoven and Schnittke.\n  \n\n  \nRecital Program\n\n\n\nFranz Schubert ( 1797-1828)\n     Allegro\n  \nGideon Klein (1919-1945) \n     I. She is a founding member of the award-winning Lafayette String Quartet which performed together for 37 years before taking their final bow in August of 2023. \nIn those years\, the Lafayette quartet enjoyed a rich musical life together with the same four members. Highlights of their years include a celebration in 2000 performing all sixteen of Beethoven’s string quartets\, a 30th anniversary Shostakovich Cycle\, a Second Viennese School project\, commission of five new quartets by women composers\, and the initiation of the Lafayette Health Awareness Forum. Their CBC recording “Death and the Maiden” was awarded “Outstanding Classical Recording of the Year” by the Western Canada Music Awards. \nA native of California\, Pamela served as principal cellist with the Detroit’s Renaissance City Chamber Players. She was a Ford Motor Company Artist in Residence at the Center for Creative Studies Institute of Music and Dance and a faculty member at Oakland University.
